A stone structure juts out of the hillside on the hill of Duluth, Minnesota. It doesn’t have fancy lights or anything flashy. Its vapid holes for windows, open to the elements year-round, beckon the tourists and locals alike.
Its octagonal shape, five stories, and look-out tower at the top offer an enticing view of Duluth and the harbor below. Enger Tower was named after a Norwegian immigrant, Bert Enger, who donated the funds to build the tower and the park around it in 1921 but died ten years later. The tower was finished in 1939 and dedicated by the Prince and Princess of Norway!
In 2011, it went through a renovation and was re-dedicated by King Harold and Queen Sonja of Norway. Since about 2012, we have been taking little family trips to see the fall colors and hike with our boys every fall. We often came to Enger Tower. I had been there a few times in my teen years and felt sad energy there, but I never knew why until I researched.
Last year, when we went hiking with our friends on Friday the 13th, we decided to do all the haunted things. I found out the tower was haunted! A man is said to have jumped to his death from the top of the tower back in 1949. They discovered his body on the ground a few hours later, but he was never identified.
Many people have said they have seen a man at the top of the tower as they approach, but once they get there, no one is there, and the same is true of the grounds.
And I can attest to this. We were walking down from the tower with our friends, and I saw a man out of the corner of my eye on the path to my left in the gardens. When I turned to look at him, he wasn’t there.
Now, don’t let the thought of a possible ghost sighting scare you away from visiting Enger Tower.
It is an excellent location for the best view of Duluth's harbor! Plus, they have installed a very cool Japanese garden that is so peaceful and zen. You can even ring the giant bell in the garden for peace.
Many couples have their weddings there now, and they don’t let the ghost stories intimidate them!
Whether you’re looking for something spooky this Halloween or a zen place to go in Minnesota, I highly recommend Enger Tower and Garden. It’s free, has a great view, and you might get a thrill from a ghost searching for peace.
Until our Next Adventure,
Lizzie ❤️
