For our 23rd wedding anniversary, my husband and I decided to spend the weekend in the small Minnesota town of New Ulm. It is historically known for its German heritage. I don’t have a lick of German in me, ironic with the last name of Schultz! It was really interesting to learn about the different nuances and see the architecture of Germany that influenced this little town on the Minnesota River.
One business that piqued our interest was a cocktail bar. As we were meandering down the main street window-shopping, we noticed these large black sliding windows wide open. People were visiting and laughing in the dark interior. It looked cozy and boutique. I was immediately interested. It was my kind of place.
We went a few hours later and sat at a table for two. Small, cozy vignette seating areas of leather chairs, couches, and small table sets made up the space. Each space was created with conversation in mind.
As I walked in, the focal point was this beautiful mosaic tile wall that said Sweet Haven Tonics behind the long bar full of comfy bar-height stools. The ample space was broken in half by a small half-wall and large whicker pendant lights that ran the room's length as the other focal point. Small abstract mood lighting was on each little table, along with live plants creating a zen atmosphere.
They had a variety of exciting cocktails to try. I mean, interesting! Each drink tantalizes the taste buds. They would mix tea and mint, jalapeno, and turmeric. It was so exotic, and yet, it worked amazingly well together. My favorite drink was the Spicy Margarita. The wonderful thing about their drinks is they also have mocktail options for anyone who doesn’t drink, AND they use natural fresh herbs in all their drinks. That is the best in this day and age when toxins bombard us; if you want to enjoy a drink, fresh ingredients are so reassuring. Although they don’t offer a food menu, they offer charcuterie. Their charcuterie boards are not only beautiful but very filling.
